Club News

'The UN, and others, have said that "no-one is safe until everyone is safe". We can be reassured that developed nations, like UK, have generally made good progress with Covid vaccination. However, many developing nations, especially ones in Africa, have barely started to get "jabs in arms".

Local cyclist Tony Beesley, a member of our Wellesbourne Wheelers Club, wanted to do something about this. "This is a global issue" says Tony, "and not all countries have the wonderful NHS or the financial support that we in the UK are fortunate to have. I felt I wanted to contribute in any way I could."

This Saturday (11/09/21) sees the running (and cycling) of the Bards Ride from Honington Hall.  Due to the large uptake for this Sportive (and haven't we missed them over the past year or so?) Sunday Club has been cancelled on Sunday.

Although the ride takes place on entirely familiar roads, at only £15 it is still worth supporting.  For more information go to https://warwickshirechurches.org.uk/about-bards-ride/

As we enter another national lockdown all club rides are cancelled until further notice (at the moment until at least the 1st December).

The new rules allow you to exercise outdoors with the people you live with, with your support bubble or, when on your own, with 1 person from another household.

Where appropriate we would therefore encourage you to cycle with another club member as this allows some socialising (please remember to social distance) and support in the unfortunate event of a mechanical issue or an accident.

There are a list of local 25-30 mile routes on the website and we plan to extend these over the coming weeks/months as the website is updated.

The Club AGM is planned for the 11th January 2021 via a Zoom meeting, when the formal requirements will be addressed. More details to follow.

We hope to hold an “all members” meeting later in the year when we are able to meet in person and have open discussion on any points that members may wish to raise. In the meantime, if there are any issues/points that you wish the committee to consider please e-mail Shauna our secretary at:  This email address is being protected from spambots. Alongside the first official Tuesday Evening ride on 6th April at 6pm we are running the first women only ride - we are aiming to get all the female club members on their bikes to start the Tuesday evening season and celebrate the lighter evenings and the fact that we can now cycle in groups.

As a British Cycling affiliated club we can cycle in groups of up to 15 - however for practical purposes we’ll probably split into groups of no more than 6 or 8 but it will depend on numbers. Do please join us.

The Women’s group will be undertaking a relatively short relaxed paced ride looping round to Idlicote - about 20 miles. If you may be interested in joining us on the 6th please email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If you can't make the 6th but you’re interested in future events please get in touch

Finally, after a number of months, the club is now in a position to resume formal club rides. This is brilliant news, and I hope you are all as excited as us that we are now able to do so. It is also understood if you wish to leave it for a period before resuming. I personally think that in these times the best course of action is the one that you feel most comfortable with.

We have updated the Wellesbourne Wheelers Riding Guidance for you which describes how club rides will resume. I would be grateful if you could read them and ensure that you are in full knowledge of how our formal rides will resume. In summary;

  1. No group ride will have more than 6 people, and you should not change group during the ride;
  2. Two abreast riding is now permitted, where safe to do so, keeping to the government's 1m+ guidance;
  3. Whilst no formal booking system, your attendance must be communicated via the relevant WhatsApp group (or via a short email to the ride leader for those not using WhatsApp) in advance so we know how many people are attending group rides and splits can be made accordingly;
  4. Thursday rides will have staggered start times to ensure we do not have a large gathering of people at the usual meeting place, Mountford will leave at 10am, Dene at 10:15am and Hastings at 10:30.

Whilst not the full resumption of pre-lockdown group riding, it is great to be able to start re-introducing formal club rides.
We hope to see you on a Club ride soon.

Regards,  Alex Jones,  Chairman

Wellesbourne Wheelers Club Cycling Guidelines

Effective from 2nd December 2020 & reflecting that Wellesbourne, Warwickshire is currently within Tier 3, this Club guidance reflects that published on the GOV.UK website and the latest advice from British Cycling.

All group rides must ensure that there is a maximum of 6 riders.

The Club Christmas Dinner and Awards night was held on Friday 10th December at the Charlecote Pheasant with the Wheeler of the Year award going to David Thomas and very well deserved too.  Also, several people who have spoken to me since the event have said that the food was better than it was last year, which is even more good news.
